Tories reap whirlwind over beer and bingo stereotype

Mocking Tories faced a huge backlash yesterday after a party poster exposed their true thoughts on working people.

Mocking Tories faced a huge backlash yesterday after a party poster exposed their true thoughts on working people.

A Conservative banner promoting Wednesday's Budget was posted on Twitter by MP Grant Shapps.

It said: "Cutting the bingo tax and beer duty: To help hardworking people do more of the things they enjoy."

The statement eerily re-sounded with one of late RMT leader Bob Crow's last words on the personal attacks he suffered from the right-wing press.

He said: "Is a working man supposed to walk around with a hankie on his head, eat chip sandwiches and drink pints of bitter to prove he's working-class?"

The banner was universally derided on social networking sites for its almost comical reliance on stereotypes - despite being a deadly serious Tory statement.

In response Twitter user Alex White posted an amended 1992 Tory campaign poster featuring John Major that read: "What does the Conservative party offer a working-class kid from Brixton? Beer and bingo."

A Twitter user going by the name of Bertie Buttons sent a message to Mr Shapps saying: "Thats a joke, right? Even the Tories couldn't be that crass."

The hashtag #torybingo was also trending with suggestions for number calling including "Eton's den number 10" and "Bullingdon mates 88."

Remaining resolute in their blinkered and self-serving beliefs a senior Tory source said the Conservative Party would not pull the image.

He said: "We are quite proud of those tax cuts... We stand by what was said in that advert."
