Arsenal 2 Marseille 0: Gunners odds on for knockouts

by Amar Azam at Ashburton Grove

Arsenal look certain to progress from Group F after a pair of goals from Jack Wilshere saw them beat Marseille in this Champions League encounter.

Arsenal go to Napoli on December 11 odds on to go through to the final 16 with Borussia Dortmund.

But Rafa Benitez's Italians could still pip them to the post if they beat the north Londoners and score at least three.

"We were in control and it looked, at times, that we lacked a bit of sharpness to finish the game off but overall we were always in control of the game and the only regret is that we couldn't score more goals," said manager Arsene Wenger.

"We have 12 points in five games overall, it's a good number of points, and I'm confident we can take another point or three in Naples if we play well."

It has to be said that Arsenal, looking to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League for the 14th year in succession, were unconvincing for much of this match.

With the match just 30 seconds old, Wilshere struck to give Arsenal the lead. The midfielder had drifted into space on the right wing from where he capped off a fine move.

The England player ran onto a pass from full-back Bacary Sagna, cutting inside a desperate Lucas Mendes challenge before curling the ball high into the goal and beyond the reach of goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

On 7 minutes, Wilshere played in Aaron Ramsey, who had broken into the penalty area. The Welshman couldn't convert the pass, and Mandanda was able to block the close range attempt following an intricate flowing move.

Despite the good early start and Marseille's poor form, Arsenal made heavy weather of the tie. It would have been easier had Mesut Ozil scored a first-half penalty.

Shortly before the interval Nicolas N'Koulou tripped Ramsey in the box. Ozil's penalty however was poor and easily saved by Mandanda.

On 66 minutes, Arsenal supporters were able to breathe a sigh of relief when their side were further ahead. Ramsey, impressive in midfield, began the move from the edge of the penalty area with a pass out to Ozil.

The German played a clever first-time ball into Wilshere, who slotted it in from close range.
