Venezuelan forces break up student protest camp

HUNDREDS of Venezuelan National Guard and police broke up four camps maintained by student protesters and arrested 243 people in an early morning raid today.

The anti-government camps were installed more than a month ago.

Venezuela’s Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez Torres said that the 243 would appear in court later.

President Nicolas Maduro’s administration has grown increasingly fed up with the demonstrations and last week announced that it had arrested 58 foreigners, including a US citizen, for inciting violent street protests.

Both Mr Maduro and Mr Torres have denounced them as part of a plot to promote unrest aimed at overthrowing the administration.

Meanwhile, the US Congress moved closer to imposing economic sanctions against Venezuela.

A House panel will finalise its version of a sanctions Bill today, involving $15 million (£8.8m) to “promote democracy and rule of law,” a ban on visas for Venezuelan officials and a freeze on their assets.
