Homeless mums march for social housing

HOMELESS mums threatened with eviction from their hostel led a loud and colourful march through East Ham, London, on Saturday in a growing grass roots campaign for social housing.

The 30 women were joined by around 120 supporters in the protest against social cleansing.

They were told by Labour’s Newham borough Mayor Robin Wales that they would be placed in social housing hundreds of miles away from family and friends when the E15 Foyer hostel was closed.

Their formidable campaigning has won them the right to remain in the borough but the private accommodation they will be placed in has high rent and insecure 12-month contracts.

The march called on Newham Council to stop leaving council homes empty and flogging off estates for profit while leaving those in need of social housing high and dry.

Mums spokeswoman Jasmine Stone said: “The problem is a lot wider than just our hostel, we meet many people who are facing social cleansing and expensive unaffordable rents.”
