Imperial Tobacco factory closure branded 'political' by unions

Nottingham premises to shut at a cost of 540 jobs

Unions have slammed the “political” closure of a Nottingham tobacco factory that will mean the loss of 540 jobs.

Imperial Tobacco is to end cigarette manufacturing in Britain after announcing plans to close the factory and relocate production to factories in eastern Europe.

But unions GMB and Unite accused Imperial Tobacco of a “cynical ploy” to dodge the recent EU Tobacco Products Directive.

The directive prevents the sale of packets of 10 cigarettes and rolling tobacco packets of under 30 grams (1.1 oz).

GMB regional officer Chris Needham called the closure “a devastating blow” to the local economy.
