Jewish socialists defend London theatre over decision to reject Israeli-funded performance

Jewish socialists defended London’s Tricycle theatre yesterday over its decision to reject funding from the Israeli embassy.

The theatre in north London asked organisers of the UK Jewish Film Festival — an event it has hosted for the past seven years — not to use the £1,400 sponsorship from the embassy.

Tricycle management even offered to replace the cash so the 26 films could still be shown, but festival organisers responded by pulling the event from the theatre. But the Jewish Socialists’ Group issued support for the theatre’s “entirely restrained expression of the widely shared horror at the war on Gaza.”

In a letter to managers, the group said: “We appreciate the Tricycle’s generosity in offering to replace that sponsorship and greatly regret the decision by the chair of the UK Jewish Film Festival to ignore your offer and withdraw from staging the event.”
