Miners' strike 30th anniversary: Ian Lavery to open Leeds commemoration

Former National Union of Mineworkers president to speak at major event celebrating defence against Thatcherism

Activists announced plans yesterday for a major celebration marking the 30th anniversary of the start of the 1984-5 miners’ strike.

Guest speaker is Ian Lavery, Labour MP for Wansbeck in the North East, former President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and chairman of Labour’s parliamentary trades union group of MPs.

East Leeds Labour Party is hosting the event, which is supported by general union GMB, at the Barnbow pub in Austhorpe Road in Crossgates in East Leeds on Thursday April 24. It begin at 7.30pm.
