Demonstrators call for end toIsrael's slaughter in Gaza

HUNDREDS of people threw their weight yesterday behind the campaign against Israel’s ongoing butchering of Palestinians by joining a second emergency demonstration in less than a week after bombings in the Gaza Strip escalated.

Trade unionists and Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) supporters took to the streets demanding an end to the violence and expressing solidarity with victims.

PSC director Sarah Colborne said the protests were vital as she believed that the “people in Britain are sickened and outraged at Israel’s slaughter in Gaza.”

The military strike — which is now going into its fifth day — has seen almost 100 killed, 21 of whom are young children and infants.

PSC has urged the British government to take action and pressure Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the attacks.

Prime Minister David Cameron has reportedly exchanged phone calls with Mr Netanyahu to offer the country’s “staunch support for Israel.”

Ms Colborne said she was angered and that the Tory PM “does not speak for the British people.”

Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn showed his support marching along at this Friday’s demonstration.

The long-time advocate for the people of Palestine laid an early day motion in Parliament, which has been supported by Respect’s leader George Galloway and Conservative MP Peter Bottomley among others.

“Israel is now conducting collective punishment of the people of Gaza,” Mr Corbyn told the Star.

“We are demanding that MPs show an understanding of the situation and the illegality of collective punishment.”

Israel has justified its actions claiming that Hamas forces have fired hundreds of rockets from its bases in Gaza.

But their so-called Operation Protective Edge has killed more civilians than Israel’s last major strike on the Strip, while Gazan charges have not yet resulted in casualties.

The Palestinian observer at the United Nations Dr Riyad Mansour begged the security council yesterday to intervene and save lives.

“The illegal, inhumane Israeli occupation is unjustifiable under any context and contravenes all principles of international law, human decency and moral conscience,” said Dr Mansour.

“It is an occupation that proves again and again its racist, aggressive, expansionist agenda and lack of respect for the sanctity of life and rights of the Palestinian people.”
