Joe Strummer tribute gig set to raise cash for striking firefighters

London’s calling for fans of rock legends The Clash this week, with organisers of a Joe Strummer tribute gig hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for striking firefighters.

Strumming on stage will be the likes of Taurus Trakker, the Rotten Hill Gang and Comrade X — all solid trade union-backers who hail Mr Strummer as an inspiration.

He became a hero among members of the Fire Brigades Union in 2002 after reuniting with Clash guitarist Mick Jones for the first time in 20 years for a benefit concert during a previous firefighters’ walkout. He died only weeks later.

Thursday’s event will take place at Maxilla Hall by London’s Westway road.

“For many of us the fight for economic and social justice is bound up with our love of music and that was a combination that was at the core of everything Joe Strummer and the Clash stood for,” said compere Geoff Martin.

The gig kicks off at 7.30pm.
