Liverpool return to top of league

Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham

by Kadeem Simmonds

Liverpool brushed Tottenham aside to move up to first place in the Premier League.

The Reds never looked in danger of losing the game and were a goal up after only two minutes.

With Chelsea and Manchester City still to visit Anfield, the Merseyside club now have their destiny in their own hands and will feel that on this form, they can beat anyone at home.

A Glen Johnson cross seemed to be easily cut out by Younes Kaboul but his mis-control saw the ball end up in his own net.

The goal didn’t wake Spurs up as the home side continued to press and could have doubled their lead if the final ball was better.

An injury midway through the first half saw Jan Vertonghen come off and his replacement Michael Dawson gifted Liverpool their second of the afternoon.

His pass wasn’t good enough for Kaboul — who was easily nudged off the ball by Suarez -— and the Uruguyan continued into the box to beat goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and take his tally to 29 for the season, beating Robbie Fowler’s previous record of 28.

It was almost 3-0 just before half-time but Suarez saw his header tipped onto the bar by Lloris.

The inevitable third came 10 minutes into the second-half.

Philippe Coutinho’s shot from the edge of the box found the bottom right hand corner to put the game beyond Tottenham’s reach.

Tottenham had a few half-chances but conceded a fourth when Jordan Henderson’s free-kick evaded everyone and went in with Lloris left standing helpless on his line.

To add insult to injury — literally — Tottenham ended the game with 10 men when Roberto Soldado left the field on a stretcher.
