Heathrow rail staff strike against 'savage' cuts

90 per cent vote for strike action as bosses attack pay and jobs on Heathrow Express

Rail workers on Heathrow Express stood firm yesterday against bosses' attacks on their pay and jobs by voting overwhelmingly for strike action.

Bosses have announced cuts which the rail staff's union RMT said were attacks on pay, safety and 200 jobs.

The workers voted 90 per cent vote for strike action.

RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash said the union "does not buy for a moment the case for handing out savage cuts to Heathrow Express when Heathrow is generating handouts to shareholders of over £600 million.

"Our members have now sent the clearest possible message in this ballot that they are prepared to stand up and fight the cuts and the threat to pay, working conditions and jobs," he added.

He said demand for services was growing and that the idea that safety be sacrificed at the stroke of an accountant's pen "would shame London and leave these high-profile services extremely vulnerable."
