Unions appeal to Vince Cable: Stop AstraZeneca takeover

UNIONS made an urgent face-to-face appeal to Business Secretary Vince Cable yesterday for intervention to stop the dangerous takeover of AstraZeneca by US drugs giant Pfizer.

Leading officials from GMB and Unite urged Mr Cable to use legislative powers to save 7,000 threatened British jobs.

They held talks in Mr Cable’s Whitehall office on the eve of today’s Commons select committee session on the threatened Pfizer takeover.

The Commons business committee will hear this morning from Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke and GMB national officer Allan Black before grilling Pfizer bosses, AstraZeneca executives and Mr Cable himself.

The talks come as a poll commissioned by Unite found that just 14 per cent think allowing the takeover is in Britain’s best interests, with Tory voters most likely to demand a public interest test.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said Prime Minister David Cameron was “in danger of once again misjudging the public mood and being on the wrong side of opinion.”
