World Cup clash with Olympics ‘is on Fifa’

2022 Winter chief won't move Games

A top Olympic official insisted yesterday that the 2022 Winter Olympics won't be moved to make way for a rescheduled Qatar World Cup.

World football governing body Fifa is considering moving the competition to avoid the blazing summer heat in the Gulf state.

But Association of National Olympic Committees president Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah said that it was up to Fifa to ensure there isn't a clash.

"We already have been committed, the organisers have been organised, the broadcasting, the marketing partners," Mr Sabah said.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it has repeatedly been assured by Fifa president Sepp Blatter that the events won't clash.

The 2022 Winter Olympics are due to be held in either Beijing or Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Fifa has said it is considering shifting its tournament to either January-February or November-December. However European clubs much prefer April-May 2022.
