Glassworkers go on strike

WORKERS who make bullet-proof glass to protect VIPs walked out on strike for two weeks today over pay.

The 112 Unite members are based at two sites operated by Tyneside Safety Glass at Gateshead in north-east England.

The company makes laminated and toughened glass for bus windows and windscreens as well as bulletproof items.

Unite says bosses are pocketing huge pay increases — including a 14 per cent pay rise for the highest-paid director.

But the workforce was expected to accept a 7 per cent deal over three years with “strings” attached to make it self-financing.

Talks through conciliation service Acas broke down last week.

Unite regional officer Bob Bolam said: “Our members are taking strike action as a last resort over this paltry offer.

“They believe that this profitable company could well afford to be more generous.”

The action follows a week-long strike earlier this month.
