ANTI-FASCISTS and anti-racists in Yorkshire are mobilising today to oppose a visit of the English Defence League to the town of Batley.
Residents in the West Yorkshire town have united by launching “We Are Batley” and are staging a peaceful, multi-cultural celebration.
The group is supported by local trade union branches and Huddersfield trades union council.
Kirklees Unison branch chair Nick Ruff said “The EDL’s racism and violence is not welcome in Batley or anywhere in Kirklees.”
Chair of the Rabetah Al Ulama Al Islamiyyah (Institute of Islamic Scholars) Hashim Sacha said “We in Batley have had a multicultural community since the early 1950s and have lived in harmony with our neighbours by getting involved and supporting each other.”
The Rt Revd Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield, said he condemned “all who seek to divide and sow the seeds of distrust between our communities.”
The celebration starts at 10.30am in the New Way Car Park.
