Water cannon shipped to Britain

CONTROVERSIAL water cannon have been shipped to Britain in preparation for use in London — despite police not yet having official permission to use them, Boris Johnson confirmed yesterday.

Home Secretary Theresa May has yet to grant permission for the weapons to be used, but the London mayor confirmed receipt of the cannon at a meeting of the Police and Crime Committee at City Hall yesterday.

He said: “They are being prepared for use in this country and obviously we await the certificate from the Home Office.”

Responding to the news Green peer Jenny Jones said it was “a depressing day for policing by consent.”

She said the mayor’s desire to give the Met Police the weapon had meant he had ignored the assembly’s investigation on this issue, his own consultation where 98 per cent of Londoners said they didn’t want them and members of his own team who have concerns.

“Water cannon have no place on our streets and I hope the Home Secretary sends them back,” added Ms Jones.
