THOUSANDS of angry car workers in Brazil’s biggest city Sao Paulo blocked a major motorway on Monday in protest at the firing of 800 Volkswagen workers.
Metalworkers’ union members from VW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz took to a main road south of the capital, blocking traffic in both directions.
Police said that more than 5,000 workers had been involved in the peaceful march against last week’s sackings.
Union leaders said that they were seeking an immediate reversal as well as strengthened unemployment benefits for redundant car workers.
VW has claimed that weaker car sales in Brazil forced it to sack the workers.
Overall, car sales in Brazil dropped 7 per cent in 2014.
However, VW reported a worldwide 16 per cent rise in gross profit in the third quarter of last year and its net income jumped 56 per cent to €3 billion (£2.3bn).
