Labour Party activists to hit policy forum in call for nationalised rail and emergency budget

Trade unions and constituency branches link up to force leadership to accept public will, writes CONRAD LANDIN

Labour activists will stage a spring revolt at the party’s policy forum next week, calling for full renationalisation of the railways and an emergency budget to form part of the 2015 manifesto.

Rail union Aslef and over 60 constituency party branches are understood to have tabled amendments to draft policy documents, calling for privatised rail companies to be nationalised one by one, as current franchises expire.

An alternative proposal to merely allow the state to compete against private bidders, mooted by a party insider last week but not included in policy documents, has not been popular among trade unions and party activists.

Members’ reps will also launch a call for a commitment to end budget austerity in the event of a Labour general election win next year.

Several constituency parties have followed Labour Assembly Against Austerity calling for “an emergency budget to end self-defeating austerity so as to solve the cost of living crisis.”

And 45 constituency branches have tabled amendments to the draft foreign policy document, calling for the scrapping of Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons system.

At previous national policy forums, members have complained of being put under pressure to withdraw their amendments from front-bench MPs and party officials.

If left activists’ amendments fail to win a majority but still command significant support, two rival positions will be put to the party’s conference in September.
