Welsh language activists detained over slogan-spraying

THREE Welsh language activists were arrested yesterday after spraying slogans on a Welsh government building.

A man and two women daubed demands including “Welsh education for all” — “addysg Gymraeg i bawb” — on the entrance to the offices in Aberystwyth at around 7.45am.

The trio from the Welsh Language Society then sat in front of the offices with supporters and waited for the police.

It was the group’s latest stunt designed to shake the Welsh government into action to reverse falling levels of Welsh language use exposed in last year’s census.

It comes after chairman Robin Farrar was arrested last month for spray-painting the government’s Cardiff headquarters.

Welsh Language Society spokeswoman Sioned Haf said: “Only through civil disobedience is it possible for us to convey the seriousness of the situation.

“We are determined that our generation will not allow the language to decline and that’s our main aim as campaigners today — to make a stand and to challenge Carwyn Jones’s inaction.”

Campaigners are calling for First Minister Mr Jones to make six policy changes to reverse the decline, including changes to education and planning laws.

“All that we ask of Carwyn and the Labour-led government is to show the leadership that reflects the seriousness of the present state of the Welsh language,” Ms Haf added.

“With positive protest and political will we can change the fate of the language and ensure it flourishes over the years to come.”

The Welsh government said only that “this is a matter for the police.”
