News in Brief: 27/9/2014

BLOND AMBITION: London Mayor Boris Johnson will play a “huge” role in the Conservative Party’s general election campaign, the Tory chairman revealed yesterday.

Grant Shapps said Mr Johnson, who will combine the role with his efforts to secure election as an MP while also seeing out his term as the capital’s mayor, was “up for the fight.”

Conservatives will gather in Birmingham for their party conference on Sunday, which Mr Shapps indicated would focus on stamping out any risk posed by Labour.

GAY PRIDE: Trade unionists in Lincoln have donated £100 towards the city’s Gay Pride celebrations which take place on Sunday.

Lincoln and District TUC secretary Nick Parker said: “Homophobic attacks happen every week across the country and we support the right of LGBT people to live their lives in peace and without fear.”

The event takes place tomorrow from 12-6 in City Square in Lincoln.

NUCLEAR: THE EU could face legal action if it gives the go-ahead to a highly subsidised new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset, experts warned yesterday.

The government is working with French state-owned energy firm EDF on the project. It would involve taxpayer subsidies of £16 billion and a guaranteed price for its electricity at double current levels.

COUNTER-TERRORISM: Police made more arrests yesterday during a motorway swoop as part of an investigation into alleged supporters of banned extremist group al-Muhajiroun.

Two men aged 33 and 42 were stopped and detained near junction one of the M6 outside Rugby in Warwickshire, Scotland Yard said.

A total of 11 men have now been arrested during the probe.
