US biotech giant Monsanto agreed on Wednesday to pay nearly $2.4 million (£1.5m) to settle a dispute with farmers in the Pacific north-west over genetically modified wheat.
No such wheat has been approved for US farming, but it was found in Oregon in 2013.
The discovery prompted Japan and South Korea to suspend some wheat orders while the European Union called for more rigorous testing of US shipments.
Agriculture Department officials said that the wheat discovered in Oregon was the same strain as a GM grain designed to be herbicide-resistant that was tested by Monsanto a decade ago but never approved.
The company said that it would settle the case rather than pay for an extended legal battle.
