Iconic Hebden Bridge Trades Club turns 90

HEBDEN BRIDGE’S Trades Club celebrated its 90th anniversary at the weekend with a huge May Day street party.

The socialist club in Yorkshire first opened in May 1924 with the help of donations from thousands of workers in the textile and tailoring industries.

When the industries disappeared in the 1970s the building fell into disuse but was reopened by Labour party branches a decade later.

Anti-capitalist poet Graham Alexander joined the supporters on Saturday to celebrate its new reputation as a music venue, benefit events for Palestine solidarity and the Morning Star fighting fund.
