Anti-racism group Hope Not Hate is to mobilise its “biggest and most sophisticated campaign to date” to challenge Ukip in May.
The group warned yesterday that Ukip was planning “a huge assault at the ballot box” amid growing fear, division and hatred in wider society.
“We have to mobilise mainstream British society around our shared values of tolerance, fairness, respect and equality to ensure that those who seek to divide us by spreading fear and hatred fail,” said Hope Not Hate director Nick Lowles.
Ukip poses a “very serious threat” in nine constituencies and could win 25-30 per cent of votes in another 20, according to Hope Not Hate’s research.
Some 407 council wards across 51 local authorities are also at risk.
“Ukip is not the BNP and Nigel Farage is not Nick Griffin, but in many ways its threat is even more worrying,” added Mr Lowles.
