TRADE unionists and members of West Yorkshire’s Irish community joined forces in Huddersfield for a weekend celebration of the centenary of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising.
The town’s Irish Centre was the venue for three days of events organised jointly with Huddersfield Trades Union Council.
Activities included talks, dancing, a video on the Rising made by local schoolchildren from the Irish community, and performances, including the appearance on Saturday night by internationally renowned Irish folk singer Andy Irvine.
A hundred copies of the Morning Star, with its 12-page pull-out on the Rising, produced in co-operation with the Connolly Association, were distributed.
Morning Star northern reporter Peter Lazenby was guest speaker at the final event last night, followed by a performance of Dublin Burning by Mike Hanrahan and Brendan Begley, an anthology of music, songs and poetry about the rebellion.
