CELEBRITY: Actor Bob Hoskins, who rose from humble roots in north London to Hollywood fame and fortune, died in hospital on Tuesday night aged 71.

The star, known for roles in films as diverse as the animated hit Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the classic London gangland thriller The Long Good Friday, died from pneumonia.

FIRE: A blaze that destroyed cars belonging to Olympic athletes Kelly Sotherton and Nathan Douglas is not thought to have been started deliberately, police said yesterday.

Police said the fire on the couple’s driveway in Sotton Coldfield may have been caused by a technical fault.

HEALTH: Children are being “let down” by “inadequate” healthcare, leading nurses warned yesterday.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said children in Britain had poorer health outcomes than those in other European countries.

It was “imperative” that healthcare for young people improved, the nursing union said.

The comments follow a cross-sector report which showed that many child deaths were preventable.

CRIME: Police have been given extra time to question a schoolboy over the fatal stabbing of a teacher during class, they revealed yesterday.

Ann Maguire was just months from retirement, having worked at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds for over 40 years, when she was attacked on Monday morning.

West Yorkshire Police yesterday confirmed a 15-year-old boy, who was detained by staff following the stabbing and arrested at the school, remains in custody.
