THE Communist Party of Austria (KPO) has made gains on the council of the country’s second-largest city.

After the final count of postal votes yesterday, the KPO was awarded two seats on Graz’s seven-seat executive council, a gain of one at the expense of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), now out of the city government for the first time.

The party retained the 10 seats it held on the 48-seat general council, gaining 20 per cent of the vote in the city of 350,000 inhabitants, a slight increase on the last election.
