Film: Nothing But A Man (12)

Inspired by kitchen-sink realism, this film shatters the delusion of the American Dream

Nothing But A Man (12)

Directed by Michael Roemer

5 Stars

Made in 1964 Nothing But A Man was hailed as the first US film to portray African-Americans in a social drama dealing with family and social problems sparked by the love affair between a railroad worker (Ivan Dixon) and a teacher (Abbey Lincoln).

Inspired by the kitchen-sink realism that the US Establishment sought to curb, since it was considered the spawn of bolshevism, the film's designed to shatter the delusion of the American Dream - and does so memorably.
