AGEING war criminals led a thousand marchers through the Latvian capital Riga yesterday to pay tribute to wartime nazi collaborators.

Participants were honouring the Latvian Legion, which fought in German Waffen SS units against the Soviet Red Army.
Marchers claimed the legion was defending national independence against Russian domination.

They walked to Riga’s Freedom Monument, where they laid flowers and sang songs.

But protesters, many from Latvia’s ethnic Russian minority, denounced the march as an insult to the millions who had fought and died in the struggle against nazi Germany.

After the ceremony, a small group of protesters dressed in mock disinfectant gear cleaned the ground near the monument in a symbolic gesture and displayed photos of nazi atrocities.

“The glorification of the legion is synonymous with the glorification of nazism,” said young protester Alexander Filey.
