Eighth World Cup worker dead

Brazilian Fabio Hamilton de Cruz fell from 25ft height

A Brazilian construction worker has died at the Sao Paulo stadium, bringing the total death toll to eight.

Fabio Hamilton de Cruz suffered fatal injuries after he fell off a stand 25ft — 8m — high.

De Cruz was installing temporary seats, with the World Cup due to start here on June 12 when Brazil take on Croatia.

This is the third death in this stadium alone. Back in November, two workers died when a crane collapsed.

Jerome Valcke, head of football governing body Fifa, said on Twitter: “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a worker at Arena Sao Paulo today. My thoughts and condolences are with his family and colleagues.”

Mr Cruz worked for WDS Construcoes and the firm that hired them, Fast Engenharia, said in a statement that he was still alive when taken to a hospital.

But he died from his injuries hours later.
