ANTI-FASCISTS will be out in force in Croydon today to counter a rag-tag mob of neonazis descending on a Home Office building to mouth off about refugees.
The far-right South East Alliance (SEA) is holding an unwanted demonstration outside Lunar House, the building asylum-seekers must go to when they arrive in Britain.
Civil servants’ union PCS called on Home Office permanent secretary Philip Rutnam to stop the far-right demo.
It warned that it is a “cynical and inflammatory move by the racists” following the recent attack in Croydon on young asylum claimant Reker Ahmed, who suffered a fractured skull and spine, and a blood clot on his brain.
Organisers of the counter-demo Unite Against Fascism (UAF) said it was “disgusting that SEA are targeting Croydon and asylum-seekers” after the attack.
UAF national campaigner Paul Sillett told the Star: “It’s important to emphasise what a minuscule outfit the SEA are.
“But in light of the French election, we have to ensure groups like this are kept down.”
Far-right groups have repeatedly held aggressive demonstrations outside Lunar House.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “Our members who work at Lunar House should be able to go to their place of work free from the threat of violence or intimidation and new asylum-seekers should also be able to present themselves there without fear for their safety.”
The anti-fascist demo takes place from 11.30am outside Lunar House on Wellesley Road.
