A LABOUR government is needed to ensure that safety-critical guards are retained on trains, the TSSA conference heard yesterday.
Delegates raised concerns over safety and access, particularly for disabled passengers, if guards are removed, accusing fat-cat rail bosses of putting profit over people.
Rail union RMT and drivers’ union Aslef have taken strike action on a number of networks to block the threats to guards.
Conference heard that disability hate crime rises on trains with no guard, with delegates saying the only choice for many disabled people is “not to travel as they can’t get off a train at an unstaffed station.”
Disabled Working Group delegate Sharon Simmonds told the conference: “Labour would put public services over private profit, ensure safe staffing and end the implementation of driver-only operated trains. We need a Labour government.”
