Blues win battle of Britain

Birmingham 2-0 Arsenal (3-0 aggregate)

Birmingham reached the Women’s Champions League semi-finals for the first time yesterday after completing a 3-0 aggregate victory over domestic rivals Arsenal.

The Gunners were favourites to overturn their first-leg deficit but never looked like scoring at The Hive in Edgware.

Leading 1-0 from Monday’s first leg at St Andrew’s, Birmingham put the tie to bed with two goals in quick succession midway through the first half to end Arsenal’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the fourth successive time.

Kirsty Linnett netted the opener in the 25th minute before first-leg goalscorer Remi Allen added a second seven minutes later as Birmingham — who had never previously reached the quarter-finals — continued their historic campaign.

Birmingham will face European debutants Tyreso of Sweden, who have Brazilian five-time world player of the year Marta in their ranks, for a place in the final. The other semi-final pits holders Wolfsburg against their German rivals Potsdam.
