Film: The Family (15)

Luc Besson directs an odd but entertaining movie

The Family (15)

Directed by Luc Besson

3 Stars

Luc Besson appears to have lost the plot in this silly but oddly entertaining mafia comedy set in France.

It stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro as the head of a notorious crime family who are relocated with their two teenage kids from the US to Normandy under the witness protection programme.

Unsurprisingly, they find it difficult to blend in as old habits die hard and they all have serious issues.

Written and directed by Besson this vires from funny to extremely violent to sentimental without drawing breath.

It has an at times disjointed feel but Pfeiffer and De Niro are wonderful together though Tommy Lee Jones as their FBI handler comes across as a little too surreal.

A bizarre comedy, even for Besson, but surprisingly enjoyable.
