CLEANERS working for Virgin Trains on its InterCity West Coast route are to vote on strike action after a sub-contractor decided to sack 15 per cent of the staff and pile their workload onto those remaining.
Yesterday’s announcement by rail union RMT comes on top of a separate pay dispute involving catering workers at Virgin, also involving sub-contractors.
The RMT described the situation as “a nightmare, complex world of contractors and subcontractors on Britain’s privatised railways.”
Virgin has contracted cleaning services out to profiteer Alstom, which in turn has sub-contracted them to Voith Industrial Services.
It is the latter firm that plans to sack the equivalent of 37 full-time cleaners.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “It is disgusting that the staff who keep Virgin West Coast trains clean are now themselves being treated like dirt and RMT will fight these job cuts, the imposition of draconian working conditions and the attempt to cast poverty pay in stone for years to come.”
