Sport in brief: 23/06/2014

FOOTBALL: Ronny Deila will discover the opponents for his debut as Celtic manager when the first European draws of the season are made by Uefa today.

Celtic will find out what their first hurdle is in the race to make the group stages when the second qualifying round draw is made in Nyon at 11am.

And Norwegian Deila could be up against former club Stromsgodset with Celtic seeded and the Norwegian champions unseeded.

FOOTBALL: Wayne Rooney will be supporting Holland for the rest of the tournament, an early attempt to get on his new manager’s good side.

When asked who he will be rooting for, he said with a deadpan face: “Holland.”

With the Manchester United striker on his way home following England’s exit at the group stage, Rooney has decided to back Louis van Gaal’s Dutch side.

Van Gaal will take over as United manager once the World Cup is over.

FOOTBALL: Gary Lineker thinks England manager Roy Hodgson got his tactics completely wrong at the World Cup.

Hodgson may have received the backing of the Football Association despite England’s fastest ever World Cup finals exit but the criticism of the 66-year-old continues from outside the camp.

“Personally, I think Roy got it wrong,” Lineker said. “The system that suits this kind of England better is probably a 4-3-3.”

FOOTBALL: Cardiff City stadium will host the Women’s World Cup qualifier match between Wales and England on August 21.

Wales are currently second in Group Six, five points behind leaders England.

England only need a point to qualify from their remaining two games, with Wales first up before the final group game against Montenegro on September 17. Wales finish their qualifying campaign away to Ukraine.
