South Korea Prime Minister Chung Hong Won resigns over response to high school ferry tragedy

South Korean President Park Geun Hye accepts prime minister’s resignation over government handling of the deadly ferry sinking

South Korean President Park Geun Hye accepted her prime minister’s resignation over the government’s handling of the deadly ferry sinking yesterday.

Prime Minister Chung Hong Won’s resignation statement blamed “deep-rooted evils in society” for a tragedy that left more than 300 people dead or missing.

Most of them were high-school students on a school trip. Officials have taken into custody all 15 people involved in navigating the ferry that sank on April 16.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said yesterday that it will change ferry loading systems.

The Sewol was carrying an estimated 3,608 tons of cargo, according to an executive of the company that loaded it.

That far exceeds what the captain claimed — 150 cars and 657 tons of other cargo, according to the coastguard — and is more than three times what an inspector who examined the vessel last year said it could safely carry.
