Germany in weekend talks to smooth out US relations

GERMANY will try and reinvigorate relations with the US on an "honest basis" starting with talks this weekend, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said today.

Mr Steinmeier was unapologetic about Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision on Thursday to boot out the top CIA official in the US embassy in Berlin.

Mr Steinmeier said that it had been “the right decision, a necessary step and an appropriate reaction to the breach of trust that has taken place.”

It followed the recruitment of two Germans by US intelligence — a man who worked at the country’s foreign intelligence agency and a defence ministry employee.

Mr Steinmeier said that he will be raising the matter with US Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of talks in Vienna about Iran’s nuclear programme.

There is “no alternative” to Germany’s longstanding partnership with the US in view of challenges in Ukraine, Iran, Afghanistan and elsewhere, he stressed.
