US PRESIDENT Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort was indicted yesterday on charges of money-laundering and conspiracy against the United States.
Mr Manafort, a longtime Republican operative, arrived at the FBI field office in Washington yesterday morning to hand himself in after being indicted by a federal grand jury.
His business associate Rick Gates was also indicted. Neither Mr Trump nor his campaign was mentioned in the indictment.
The 12-count indictment was the first from Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian meddling in last year’s campaign to tilt the vote in Mr Trump’s favour.
Mr Manafort ran the Trump campaign from June to August 2016 before resigning amid reports that he might have received millions in illegal payments from a “pro-Russian” political party in Ukraine.
This is the Party of Regions of former president Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted in an EU-supported coup in 2014.
