Judges rule Coulter can face re-trial

Surjit Singh Chhokar case goes back to court

THE man cleared of murdering Surjit Singh Chhokar more than 15 years ago can be tried again, Scottish judges ruled yesterday.

At the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh, three judges granted prosecutors permission to retry Ronnie Coulter under new double jeopardy legislation.

Mr Chhokar was murdered in Overtown, North Lanarkshire, on November 4 1998.

Speaking outside the court alongside Mr Chhokar's sister Manjit Sangha, the family's solicitor Aamer Anwar said: "Today is an important decision but I hope you will appreciate that as proceedings are live, it would be inappropriate to comment any further."

Last month Angus Sinclair became the first person to be retried under the new legal provision after the collapse of a trial in 2007.

Sinclair was convicted of the murders of Christine Eadie and Helen Scott in 1977.
