London's annual May Day march will be dedicated to building on the legacies of socialist heroes Tony Benn and Bob Crow, the RMT union revealed yesterday.
Thousands of trade unionists turn out for the march and Trafalgar Square rally every year in unison with people around the world to celebrate the achievements of the working class.
Inspirational speeches that were the trademark of stalwart supporters Bob Crow and Tony Benn will be deeply missed by those attending this year.
But organisers are clear that the message is: “Don’t mourn, organise!”
May Day organising committee spokesman Tony Lennon said it was a chance to “pay tribute to the massive contribution made by Bob Crow and Tony Benn to the fight for workers’ rights and to send out the clear message that the battle goes on.”
TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady will lead tributes to the two towering figures alongside film clips and pictures from their lives, which will be broadcast on a big screen.
The march will assemble at Clerkenwell Green at noon and is expected to reach Trafalgar Square shortly after 2pm.
Acting RMT general secretary Mick Cash thanked the May Day organisers for offering “such a huge international platform at the heart of the capital city to honour Bob and Tony.”
Stop the War coalition leader Lindsay German revealed that in her final conversation with Tony Benn he said this year’s May Day should be a massive uprising against austerity.
Cardiff Trades Council has seperately announced plans to mark international workers’ day in Wales.
A march will assemble at noon at St Mary’s street and conclude with a rally at the Temple of Peace from 1pm, led by Prison Officers Association general secretary Steve Gillan.
