Music: Album review - Kevin Coyne

IVAN BEAVIS reviews Blame It On The Night

Kevin Coyne
Blame It On The Night
(Turpentine Records)
Five stars

This is the only album out of Kevin Coyne's prolific output never previously released on CD.

It is well worth the wait, with the original vinyl recording supplemented by a disc of rough mixes and unreleased songs plus bonus tracks from a 1974 Hyde Park concert.

Lovingly put together by members of Coyne's family, the album includes extensive liner notes and interview material.

As an illustration of a great artist laying down original music rooted in the troubles of the most vulnerable in society, this is hard to beat.

That's exemplified in the live rendition of Marjorie Razorblade, recognising as it does the isolation of the mentally ill as they battle to overcome their problems with scant help from society.

A classic and essential buy, not just for those already in the know about Coyne and his radical credentials. His work really does merit discovery by a new generation.
