JEREMY CORBYN was told yesterday that the British food supply is “morally mad,” with just 4 per cent of surplus food being saved.
As part of his tour of marginal constituencies, the Labour leader was in Morecambe when volunteers from clubs and co-operatives in the Lancashire town explained how they saved perfectly good food from being sent to rubbish dumps as a result of overproduction or labelling errors. He heard that some children are so hungry, they are eating food from bins and was told of the “stigma” of unsustainable food poverty and social isolation.
Sustainability Morecambe co-founder Linda Smalley told him: “Four per cent of food is picked up that would be wasted and go to landfill. It’s not sustainable on any level. Morally it’s mad.”
As well as praising the work of the volunteers, Mr Corbyn deplored “the number of children that go to school hungry and teachers who end up paying for food for themselves,” adding that he was “very determined that we give at least a free school meal to every primary school child.”
