Film: Parkland (15)

An engrossing but pointless movie

Parkland (15)

Directed by Peter Landsman

3 Stars

On the 50th anniversary of President John F Kennedy's assassination comes an intriguing drama which focuses on the unknown players who were propelled into the front line on that tragic day in Dallas, Texas.

Based on Vincent Bugliosi's book Four Days In November, Parkland concentrates on among others the unwitting cameraman who shot the most notorious 26 seconds of 8mm film in history, the doctors and nurses who fought to save the lives of both JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald, the Dallas secret service chief and Oswald's brother.

Award-winning journalist Peter Landesman's engrossing directorial debut adds fascinating colour and details to the extraordinary events that unfolded on November 22 1963, with fine performances from a cast including Billy Bob Thornton, Paul Gomati and Zach Ephron.

But the problem is that Parkland sheds no new light on JFK's murder 50 years on - which raises the question of why it's been made in the first place.
