Pensions: Tory rise in retirement age mean 'more people will die' before ever seeing their savings

People who have paid into a pension fund for decades may not see the benefit due to the rise in the retirement age, Unite conference heard yesterday.

Richard Griffiths said he is among workers who have seen their pension contributions soar while the expected payout is slashed.

The 65-year-old delegate said he has “lost count” of the funerals he has attended of family and friends who died before 65 and fears more people will never benefit from their savings under Tory plans to increase the retirement age.

“My own father died at 44 after working in the pits and my stepdad died two weeks after turning 65,” he told conference.

“All this government wants us to do is work, work, work and pay into a pension pot we’ll never see the benefit of.”

Assistant general secretary Diana Holland said people have a right to “dignity and happiness” in retirement and pledged that the union will fight further retirement age rises.
