Savile victims demand unified judge-led inquiry

There should be one inquiry led by a High Court judge with 'considerable' experience in criminal law

Victims of prolific sex offender Jimmy Savile called yesterday for all investigations into how the former DJ was able to evade justice to be brought under a single judge-led inquiry.

Alan Collins, the lawyer representing around 60 people who reported being abused by Savile, said he feared an opportunity could be "missed" by all the other investigations into Savile.

He said there should be one inquiry led by a High Court judge with "considerable" experience in criminal law who would have access to all the work undertaken by the other investigations.

"We have a number of inquiries under way at the moment - there must be at least a dozen - we have got the BBC being investigated, the NHS, various hospitals, and ... we have the police and Crown Prosecution Service," he told BBC Breakfast.

Mr Collins indicated that while these inquiries may individually do "an excellent job," they are not benefiting from each other.

He added: "It is about really, how and why - how was Savile was able to abuse so many children and young people over so many decades?"

An NSPCC spokesman said it agreed with victims that there needs to be some way to pull together all the lessons learned from the various inquiries, but stressed this must not delay learning or be an excuse for other enquiries to stop or be subsumed into one.

The charity's helpline revealed it has received 326 calls about Savile.

Peter Watt, the helpline's director, said: "Savile escaped justice because people didn't want to hear or believe what children were saying. If one glimmer of hope is to come from this torrid affair, it is that children today will be safer because we all learn to listen."
