SLAVERY is thriving in Britain, police statistics revealed at the weekend.
Children are among the victims of forced work, domestic servitude and sexual exploitation, according to figures disclosed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council.
Since May last year, officers have conducted 200 investigations into modern slavery, targeting around 900 suspects. Forty children were among the 1,689 potential victims detected.
Sixty operations targeted sexual exploitation — mainly forced prostitution in brothels — and 14 involved domestic servitude.
Child sexual exploitation was the subject of 12 operations. Victims and alleged offenders were from countries including Britain, Romania, Lithuania and Vietnam.
