TRADE unionists will protest today as Northumberland County Council votes to implement government cuts, writes Peter Lazenby.
Public service union Unison, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), Unite and the GMB will demonstrate outside Morpeth town hall between 2pm and 3pm.
Unison branch secretary Joyce Guthrie said the Labour-controlled council faced an 82.4 per cent cut in government funding.
Cuts are expected to fall mainly on the fire service, youth service, administrative workers and school support staff.
“These are desperate times for people across all of Northumberland, as services are either pared to the bone or lost altogether and jobs disappear,” said Ms Guthrie.
“With the reduction of core government funding to virtually zero by 2020, these services and jobs will be lost forever.
“The public needs to speak up now, loud and clear, and take every opportunity available and via every means possible to say: ‘Stop the destruction of our communities in Northumberland’.”
