Left opposition party Syriza has overtaken main coalition party New Democracy in opinion polls following the resignation of Cabinet Secretary Panayiotis Baltakos over his claim the PM influenced a criminal probe into the fascist Golden Dawn group.

Left opposition Syriza edged ahead of the main coalition party New Democracy yesterday in opinion polls following the resignation of Cabinet Secretary Panayiotis Baltakos.

Mr Baltakos was forced out after a video showed him accusing the prime minister of influencing a criminal probe into the fascist Golden Dawn.

A poll taken on Thursday shows Syriza ahead by 21.5-20.8 per cent.
