POSTIES’ union the CWU said last night that next week’s strike action is still on the cards after the Post Office refused to suspend its closure and franchising programme to allow negotiations.

Five days of strikes will begin on Monday including three from Crown Post Offices handling 20 per cent of all Post Office traffic. Over 300 workplaces will be affected and 3,500 staff involved.

CWU general secretary Dave Ward said the company had rejected its offer for “both parties to step back to allow for meaningful negotiations” over its plans, which could mean the extinction of Britain’s high-street post offices.
