Qualified teachers: Educationalists laugh off Nick Clegg promise for every child

Lib Dems 'delusional' for trying to airbrush key role in Tory destruction of education, says NASUWT union leader Chris Keates

Teachers yesterday laughed off Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg’s promise to ensure every child is taught by a qualified teacher as “delusional.”

Launching his party’s education pledges, Mr Clegg said that schools could enjoy freedom from Whitehall without ditching “basic safeguards.”

“There is no reason why a child attending an academy or free school should not enjoy the same basic right to be taught by a qualified teacher or to follow a core curriculum as any other child,” he said in a break with Con-Dem government policy.

NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates backed the principle but pointed out: “Until this coalition took office, that’s what they had.”

“Without the support of the Liberal Democrats the Conservatives could not have removed the requirement for schools to employ qualified teachers,” she said.

“Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats are delusional if they think this announcement can airbrush out the key role they have played in betraying our children and young people by colluding with the Conservatives.”
